Dia Mrad: Works;
Atelier 3842

Atelier 3184, Paris, France, 2023.

The artist residency as an object of labor.
Institutional residencies operate within the broader circuits of cultural capital. Utilising discarded materials—food packaging, delivery bags, and objects accumulated during a residency in Paris—this project maps the hidden economies of artistic labor. Residencies present themselves as spaces of creative autonomy, yet they impose limitations on time, resources, and production, often reinforcing precarious artistic labor under the guise of opportunity. Drawing on Marxist critiques of labor, Atelier 3842 questions whether residencies offer freedom or merely reproduce the constraints of the art world. By transforming ephemeral residues into critique, the project reveals the structures that condition artistic practice, highlighting the tensions between dependence, mobility, and institutional support.
